You know, 1991 was a big movie year for me!
Here's another installment from that year! What can I say, I must have been in
movie heaven.
Anyway,
here is a much maligned, much debated flick -- and I loved it. In fact, I've
seen it numerous times! I own the laserdisc, I own the soundtrack...I probably
even have the movie poster somewhere in this
house. There are so many great things about this flick -- and before you blow
me off, read on. You may be surprised by some of the things I love about
Thelma & Louise.
Sure,
the performances are fabulous -- this story was literally made for Susan
Sarandon and Geena Davis. But in addition to the great performances, there is
the stunningly gorgeous cinematography, the effective
use of music, the fast-paced story and the snappy dialogue. Sure there's some
male-bashing here, but you'd have to be overly sensitive to be bothered by it.
I think this movie was unfairly criticized
by those who don't understand what power this movie has for women. There are
positive male characters here -- have you seen the movie Payback? Find
me one positive female character in that movie?
Find me one female character who is not either a hooker or a junkie loser
victim. Come on...this is not male bashing. This movie is fun.
I still remember driving home
from the theatre the first time I saw it -- I kept checking the rear view mirror
for cops. Very effective and absolutely beautiful.
